HWC Workers' Victory Reception - HAPA Proud Sponsor!

 

(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) On Friday, November 17th from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the IBEW Local 1186 Akito “Blackie” Fujikawa Wing Room 306. HAPA was excited to uplift Hawaiʻi Workers Center's (HWC) Second Annual Workers' Victory Reception where they honored and uplifted the victories of the workers' movement in Hawaiʻi. This event will celebrate the victories of the labor movement in Hawaiʻi. 

As a proud member of the Hawaiʻi Workers Workers Association we support Hawaii’s workers and are dedicated in the work. Please support HWC and their fundraising efforts as its a huge component in supporting their work.

Different organizations were honored for their contributions at the event’s 2023 Workers’ Victory Reception Awards Ceremony. The Hawaiʻi Nurses Association OPEIU Local 50 and the National Union of Healthcare Workers received the Healthcare Heroes Award and Better Tomorrows was honored with the Outstanding Community Partner Award

The HWC also announced their launch of their newest workers’ association, the Restaurant Workers United, which will organize to eradicate the subminimum wage/tip penalty while also taking on other workplace issues affecting Hawaiʻi’s restaurant workers. 

Senator Kurt Fevella delivered the keynote speech. The event was sponsored by HWC’s community partners, from individuals to labor centered organizations such as the Hawaiʻi People’s Fund, the Filipino Community Center, Unite Here Local 5, the Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, Hawaiʻi Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Living Wage Hawaiʻi, and IBEW Local 1186.

Nanea Lo, HAPA’s Administrative and Programs Coordinator

Nanea Lo is from Papakōlea, Oʻahu. She is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian). Lo's educational expertise is in community planning and urban planning infrastructures. She is also a podcast host for Native Stories.

Lo is a public servant and serves as the Kona representative for the Oʻahu Burial Council, a commissioner on the Oʻahu Historic Preservation Commission, sits on the board of the Hawaiʻi Workers Center, and serves on the grant making committee for Hawaiʻi People’s Fund.

Through civic engagement, podcast hosting, and community organizing, Lo advocates for Hawaiian sovereignty, Aloha 'Āina, and feminism on the national and international scale. She has been a part of innovative local and international education and advocacy programs such as Planned Parenthood “National” Storyteller for the Pacific Northwest and Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi-Asia Pacific Leadership Program, Native American Political Leadership Program, Kuleana Academy, Young Pacific Leaders, and Peace Scholars. She believes that relationships are the fabric of life and that Aloha ʻĀina is forever.
