Supporting Community Based Leaders is More Important than Ever!

As people struggle during this challenging time, the need for accountable leadership that works for the people is becoming more and more apparent. The pandemic has emphasized some major issues that Hawaiʻi faces, such as deep class disparities, food insecurities, and an over-reliance on tourism. Without citizens who are actively engaged in the civic square, the needs of Hawaiʻi’s people fall through the cracks.

We at HAPA believe that nurturing leaders rooted in their communities and providing civic engagement education can help solve this. Through Kuleana Academy, we’ve built a network of leaders who put ʻāina and people ahead of corporate profit and status quo.

Some of those leaders include the four Kuleana Academy graduates serving on the Maui County Council. Every day, these alumni demonstrate how leaders rooted in their communities can make a difference.

Councilmember Rawlins-Fernandez and Councilmember Sinenci are just but two shining examples of what that looks like.

You can help develop more leaders like Councilmember Rawlins-Fernandez and Councilmember Sinenci by donating to our Kuleana Academy program.
