Improved Pesticide Use Reporting (SB1011) needs a hearing in CPN/WAM!

Please respectfully ask Senator’s Keohokalole and Dela Cruz to schedule a hearing for SB1011 to improve the reporting of restricted use pesticide (RUP) usage in Hawaiʻi.

Talking Points:

Restricted use pesticides (RUP) are highly toxic and therefore require a licensed applicator and additional regulations to protect public health and the environment. For example, RUP’s cannot be purchased over the counter. The first year of RUP reporting in 2019 revealed over 215k pounds of usage from Central Oʻahu to the North Shore alone. Among the concerns related to this usage are two heavily applied carcinogenic fumigants that are prone to drift off-target. To better assess the risk to local residents we require better reporting data. Without more geographically specific data we cannot conduct credible public health studies. SB1011 would require more timely and accurate reporting of RUP usage data.

SB1011 needs to be scheduled by Wednesday.

This is one of the only pesticide regulation measures still alive this session. The companion RUP reporting bill in the house has already died.
