Restore Public Trust — Investigate the Unknown Hawaiʻi Legislator Who Took $35,000 Bribe

Federal court documents revealed that in 2022, a sitting Hawaiʻi lawmaker allegedly accepted a $35,000 campaign bribeyet their identity remains hidden, and no charges have been filed.

Community leaders, including retired Judge Dan Foley and former federal public defender Alexander Silvert, are urging the Legislature to convene an independent investigation with subpoena power to uncover the truth and uphold public confidence in our democracy.

This goes beyond one lawmaker — it speaks to the integrity of Hawaiʻi’s Legislature. An unresolved $35,000 bribe tied to a sitting or recent legislator raises deep questions about accountability, ethics, and campaign influence at the Capitol—especially with no comment from Senate leadership and House Speaker Nakamura has rejected the petition before it’s even been presented.

The petition calls for the Legislature to convene an investigative committee with subpoena and contempt powers” to determine whether state laws or ethics rules were broken. No charges have been filed against that “influential” legislator despite the recording and the alleged bribe. The statute of limitations for bribery for state officials is typically five years, making the 2022 alleged act still within the window of possible prosecution.

It’s time to restore trust and transparency at the Capitol.
