In our 2022 annual reflection & renewal, we chose to feature Hawaiʻi island-based, mother, cultural practitioner, and entrepreneur Haunani Miyasato and her business Kaulana Mahina in our mailerʻs keepsake postcard.

For generations, kānaka (people) would kilo (observe) relationships between the mahina (moon) and their surroundings. Many of these observations inform the various best-practices or excellence in trades and craftsmanship through our ʻāina (lands). We hope that this calendar will assist your own practice of observing in order that we deepen our understanding and connection with this place, our surroundings, our internal seasons; in relationship to the moon. May this remind us all of our relationship with the Earth Mother and Sky Father and how we are akin to this system, not set apart. E ola!

We wanted to share Hauananiʻs work & business with you because observing ka mahina and reconnecting with our environment is a necessitated sustainability practice in cultivating our mental & spiritual resilience in movement work— more important, it is a reminder of our values and our connection with Papahānaumoku (Mother Earth) and the very reasons we show up in protection of her and our communitiesʻ which She sustains.

Our hope is that you put the card somewhere all year long, and link observations in your surroundings, your garden, your surf sessions, and your moods, and make new connections between your lived experiences, the environment, and the moon-phase.

If youʻd like to go deeper, we invite you to purchase Kaulana Mahina calendars with have more depth of knowledge and observations of farmers, fishermen, and traditional craftspeople gathered under each moon phase.
